That is awful. I'm eyeing this, or its successor, as an ipad-substitute --

That's really bad customer service, Ray. I've not had to deal with Apple too often, but, except when we were buying my daughter a macbook for college, we've had decent service. I do have [not so] pent-up anti-Apple emotins, but only because the advertising campaign is so smug.

I'm really happy with my android phone -- so there's an option.

Good luck, sorry you had to go through all that.

I have been recently introduced to the International Baccalaureate (IB) program here in the Charlotte area. It has been hugely successful here, and it is starting to pop up in other school systems in NC. The important fact I learned from my IB teacher friend about IB is that it places EQUAL WEIGHT on eight subjects: mother tongue, a second language, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts,
physical education and technology. This seems to be in line with what you describe as "classical education".
Nice post - thank you!

What nice comments about Thomas Aquinas College; it's good to see its virtues extolled. Quick correction: Thomas Aquinas College is in Santa PAULA, CA, which is about an hour north of Los Angeles. Santa CLARA is about 300 miles north, in the Bay Area.

The problem of too many papers was even around when I was in grad school, I can imagine that it is exponentially worse now! One thing that might help would be more research into unstructured information mining. I happen to know of some research in that area, and am not too optimistic.

Definitely a problem, and a fine post on it. I agree with your final advice.

We really should have more of this scanned in, too. Too bad copyright has/is a bear.

There are some precedents. I remember hearing from some math grad students that there were simply too many papers to keep up with, and discoveries could be made by trawling through older journals. At a larger scale, there's always the problem of lost information maintained orally, when print culture shifts.

That's a good question, Bryan. My initial thought on that is that it is likely going to be a much "simpler" scenario than first imagined. The reason I say this is because this whole thing with oil-for-dollars is just so elegantly simplistic in nature. Occam's razor really does seem to apply here.

Having said that, I can imagine that the rapid devaluation of the US dollar would rather quickly render worthless the holdings of US debt. If no one wants to back our debt, we'll go bankrupt pretty swiftly. It is amazing to me how, on the one hand, our economy is so critically dependent on the rest of the world, and how on the other hand the Bush administration has done such a great job of perhaps bringing us to the razor's edge of economic collapse.
